Q1: What is the partnership between The Hills Basketball Club and SoCal Hoops Basketball Academy?
A1: The two companies and their related coaching staffs collaborated for several months with the goal of developing an effective basketball training curriculum targeted for middle and high school students. The coaches created The Basketball Combine Program – Advanced Training for Middle and High School Athletes, an intense and rigorous 8-week basketball training program focused on skill development and game strategy. During the training program, players will develop their basketball fundamentals and learn how to analyze game situations and make the correct on court decisions (read and react). Players will also get to play in structured games and be given the necessary analytical tools to understand, assess, and critique their on court performance and player efficiency rating. Players will gain a true assessment of their ability to play at the next level, and be given the platform to continually develop their skills.
Q2: Who is eligible to participate in the program? Are there any skill level requirements?
A2: The program is targeted for elite 7th and 8th grade middle school school players and intermediate/elite high school players, who have the goal to play and excel at the high school level and beyond. If you want to learn more about the program, text the word COMBINE to 59769 and attend an upcoming parent and player information session.
Q3: How is the training program any different from any other club team or travel team?
A3: The Basketball Combine Program is a specialized 8-week training program focused on skill development and game strategy. In addition, the program offers specialized training to improve core shooting skills. Many travel and club basketball teams place too much emphasis on playing games, without actually developing and improving core skills and basketball IQ. Unlike many travel ball teams that just play games for the sake of playing games, the coaching staff provides the players with high tech game analysis tools, apps, and websites to assess and review player efficiency ratings, individual and team statistics, and game clips. We’ve invested over $50,000 in training tools, mobile apps, and advanced Internet technologies to streamline our training sessions and game analyses.
Q4: What will the players learn during the 8 weeks?
A4: During the first 4-weeks of the program, the coaches work on core basketball fundamentals and teach the players how to “analyze” game situations (read and react) and make appropriate on court decisions. During the last 4-weeks of the program, players will continue with the advanced skills training and play in 4 structured games. Players are given online access to every game and are expected to assess their performance based on several statistical metrics and categories. There is an optional training session with a focus on improving a player's shooting skills.
Q5: What are the program fees?
A5: For the 8-week training program, each player is required to pay an 8-week training fee, plus a one-time registration fee (covers uniform, insurance, and program fees). Once the training program commences, all fees are non-refundable, as there are pre-paid expenses to accommodate all the registered players. The coaching staff implemented the most cost effective pricing plan for the program. The total hourly cost is significantly lower than many other training programs and club teams. Many other programs are charging 2-5 times higher, with less experienced coaches and unstructured training curriculums.
Q6: When and where are the practices? How long do the practices last?
A6: All practices will be held at the Granada Hills Charter School main gym and last approx. 2-2.5 hrs. There are ~2 training sessions per week. All players must be registered prior to the start of the first practice session.
Q7: How many games will be played?
A7: During the last 4-weeks of the training program, there will be 3 scheduled inter-squad games which will be held at the Granada Hills Charter School main gym. All games will be officiated by CIF referees. The coaching staff will record and statistically track every game. Players will have online access to every game footage and be required to analyze their on court performance using the program’s Player Efficiency Rating (PER) formula.
Q8: Who are the coaches and skills trainers?
A8: The primary coaches and skills trainers are Coach Don Loperena, Coach Shawn Hackett, Coach Alvin Castro, and Coach Randy Narciso. All the coaches and skills trainers have significant basketball playing and coaching at all levels, including youth to high school to professional. The entire coaching staff has been background checked, VIRTUS trained, finger printed, and Tuberculosis (TB) screened. All of the coaches emphasize skill and player development, but also teach character, discipline, respect, and loyalty to all the players. The coaches expect the players to develop and excel on and off the court. To read the full bios of the coaches, please visit www.TheBasketballCombineProgram.com/about.html.
Q9: What are the coaching philosophies?
A9: The coaching philosophies emphasize basketball fundamentals, skill development, and and on-court decision making, core skills that are lacking in many of today’s middle school and high school basketball players. More importantly, our partnership program is structured to ensure players make progress after every practice session and game, thereby thoroughly analyzing their game film and player efficiency statistics. The organizations invested over $50,000 in training tools, mobile apps, and advanced Internet technologies to streamline our training sessions and game analyses.
Q10: What additional training services are available?
A10: Beyond the standard training program, players can also participate in specialized shooting training sessions with skills trainers and coaches to further their basketball development. Our coaching staff has access to advanced training equipment including but not limited to basketball shooting machines, Vertimax training platforms, and other training tools. Talk to a coach for additional training information.
